MOVING WITH PETS
The Nelson County Humane Society/SPCA offers these travel and moving tips to those with pets or companion animals. Sigrid Mirabella, animal behavioral consultant and trainer, adviser to the Nelson SPCA offers these suggestions.
Moving:
Make yourself aware of animal laws in the new area.
Introduce yourself and your pets to new neighbors, ask about their pets.
Bring some things from old house (toys, bed, etc.)
Have treats available, walk around new place with pets and give treats for positive new experience.
Before move, introduce pet to a crate (recommend plastic type) with treats and blanket, so they will feel secure in crate.
Let animal sleep in the room where youre sleeping, at least at first.
For cats, wander around with them and show them litter box. (Confine only if necessary.) Use an enzyme neutralizer if it does soil outside the litter box.
Travel (and Moving):
Make sure all places youll be staying are pet friendly by phone or in writing.
Check out any animal restrictions by localities (for example, some counties or cities dont allow pit bulls, etc.)
If youre crossing state lines, as a precaution get a health certificate from your vet. And carry a copy of shot records.
Carry water in a covered bowl.
Always keep a secure collar on animal with appropriate I.D. ("Martingate-style" by Premium or Lupine is recommended).
Dogs should always be on a leash, and cats in carrier. (Even if your animal is well behaved, another one might not be.)
Tattooing or micro chipping pet is useful if they get lost.
Sandy Rakowitz, practitioner of Holistic Training and Animal Care adds these suggestions:
When the temperature is hot (over 70) don't leave animals in car.
Even with outdoor cats, keep indoors to begin with. Then walk with them outside to familiarize them with the area.
Use these Bach Flowers (available at most health food stores):
"Rescue Remedy" for stress. "Walnut" for new beginnings and adjusting to changes. Three to five drops daily in water, food, or rubbed on animals face and ears. Start this prior to trip.
Stroke ears firmly but gently with thumb and forefinger from base to tip to cover all parts of ear. This will help with stress, heat or cold (temperature regulation) and respiration.
Prior to trip, try to communicate with your animal about what youre planning on doing.
